Throughout this entire course, something that stuck out to me in all the readings, books, short stories, plays, and novel we read is that the environment around us had an huge impact on our values, interests, desires, ambitions, decisions, families, attractions, and more importantly our outcome in life. In Hamlet, we saw how the environment around Hamlet's life changed the trajectory of his life and eventually affected the outcome of his life. In the Raisin in the sun, we saw how racism, and the discriminatory environment Walter found himself in, hindered his progress in life and eventually aborted his dreams. In the Lady or the Tiger, we see how the environment the people found themselves in changed the way decisions are made in their lives. In the essay, A Story of War and Change, we saw how the war environment changed the lives of men that used to be brave and noble. In the Great Gatsby, we saw a man in which the environment he wanted to be in forced him to change his entire life and eventually costed him his life. I said all this to show the unmeasurable power of proximity. Whatever you are around will eventually change your life either for the better or worse. In our society today, the power of proximity still exists. The negative impacts of proximity is arguable at its highest point in history. Majority of people today find themselves in environments that don't value knowledge, tenacity, hard work, resiliency, and excellence anymore. In an environment like this, people's values, interests, desires, ambitions, decisions, families, and attractions are shaped in a way that puts the future in grieve risk. Social media and technology have been major tools that is in close proximity to many people. Social media and technological innovations have been a great source of advancement across the world but it has also destroyed the lives of many. The environment people find themselves today with easy and constant access to media devices has negatively influenced the outcome of the lives of people.
People have become addicted to this new world filled with so many hindering factors. Certain things, ideologies, mindsets, people, resources, and substances that is in close proximity to us today poses great dangers. If we do not change our environment to one suitable for growth, prosperity, learning, innovations, corrections, and success, we are running the risks of ending this journey of life in the same way Hamlet, Walter, the army lieutenant, and Gatsby ended theirs as a result of the environment they were exposed and in close proximity to.
